Key takeaways

  • NABH's 6th edition (effective 1 January 2025) has a dedicated key performance indicators section, and NABH's KPI training covers 32 mandatory organisational KPIs plus 18 department-specific clinical indicators.
  • Every KPI needs a written numerator, denominator, data source, owner and frequency; assessors check the method, not just the number.
  • Infection control and patient safety indicators are core requirements under NABH's Patient Safety and Quality Improvement chapter.
  • Set targets from your own 12-month baseline before borrowing external benchmarks.
  • A dashboard is only useful if each red indicator leads to a recorded action.

Short answer: A hospital KPI dashboard tracks a fixed set of indicators per department — bed occupancy, average length of stay, mortality, infection rates, waiting times, AR days — each with a written formula, a named owner and a review frequency. For NABH 6th edition, build it around NABH's 32 mandatory organisational KPIs and 18 department-specific clinical indicators, use NABH's definitions, and record the action taken whenever an indicator moves.

What NABH 6th edition requires

The NABH Hospital Accreditation Standards, 6th edition, took effect on 1 January 2025. They contain 100 standards and 639 objective elements across 10 chapters:

Code Chapter
AAC Access, Assessment and Continuity of Care
COP Care of Patients
MOM Management of Medication
PRE Patient Rights and Education
IPC Infection Prevention and Control
PSQ Patient Safety and Quality Improvement
ROM Responsibility of Management
FMS Facility Management and Safety
HRM Human Resource Management
IMS Information Management System

Indicators sit mainly under PSQ.3, which expects key indicators to monitor structures, processes and outcomes across clinical care, infection control, management and patient safety; the infection control and patient safety elements are core. The standard also has a dedicated KPI section, and NABH's own KPI training for the 6th edition covers 32 mandatory organisational KPIs and 18 department-specific clinical indicators (NABH).

Use NABH's official definitions for the mandatory set. The tables below give widely used formulas for common indicators so you can set up a dashboard and check your calculations.

How JCI fits in

JCI's Hospital Standards, 8th edition, were published on 1 July 2024 and took effect on 1 January 2025. They added new Patient Safety and Healthcare Technology chapters and consolidated requirements (JCI). JCI's quality and patient safety requirements, like NABH's, expect hospitals to choose measures, validate the data, analyse trends and act on them.

Most indicators overlap. Track each KPI once, and tag it to every standard it supports — NABH chapter and, if you are JCI-accredited or preparing, the matching JCI requirement — rather than running two dashboards. For the wider differences, see NABH vs JCI accreditation.

How to build a hospital KPI dashboard in 7 steps

  1. Pick the set. Start with NABH's mandatory indicators, then add the few that matter most to your board (for example AR days or OPD-to-IPD conversion).
  2. Write the definition. For each KPI: numerator, denominator, exclusions, data source, owner and frequency, in one KPI dictionary.
  3. Map the data. Identify the HIS report, register or spreadsheet that feeds each numerator and denominator.
  4. Validate. Recalculate a sample by hand each quarter; record who checked and when.
  5. Set baselines and targets. Use 12 months of your own data before adopting external targets.
  6. Review on a rhythm. Weekly for the CEO view, monthly for department and quality committees.
  7. Act and record. When a KPI crosses its threshold, record the root cause, corrective action, owner and review date.

Three dashboard views that work

View Who Frequency What it shows
CEO weekly CEO, COO, CFO Weekly 8–12 indicators: occupancy, ALOS, OPD volume, conversions, AR days, claim rejections, mortality, incidents
Department HODs, nursing in-charge Monthly That department's KPIs with trend, target and open actions
Accreditation Quality team, NABH/JCI coordinator Monthly and before assessment Every mandatory indicator, its definition, data validation status and corrective actions

Data quality checklist

  • Each KPI has one written definition used by everyone
  • Numerator and denominator come from named sources
  • Exclusions are written down (for example, day-care cases in ALOS)
  • A sample is recalculated by hand every quarter
  • Changes to definitions are dated and logged
  • Patient identifiers are not needed for the dashboard and are removed before analysis

How to choose hospital analytics software

  1. Fixed, visible formulas. You can open any KPI and see exactly how it is calculated.
  2. Starts from exports. It works from HIS, HR and finance exports (CSV or Excel) before any integration project.
  3. Tags to standards. Each KPI can be tagged to NABH chapters and JCI requirements.
  4. Protects patient data. Patient identifiers are blocked or removed before analysis; data is hosted where your rules require.
  5. Says when it doesn't know. Plain-language questions get an answer only when the data supports it; otherwise the tool says what's missing.

How SurgyInsights helps

SurgyInsights is Surgy Health's conversational analytics for hospitals. This page lists the core indicators; SurgyInsights' catalogue covers 84 KPIs across seven areas — executive, operations, finance, quality and patient safety, human resources, nursing and clinical — each tagged to NABH and JCI.

  • Start from exports: upload CSV or Excel exports from your HIS, HR or finance systems; the first dashboard is typically live in under an hour.
  • Deterministic formulas: a fixed KPI engine calculates every number; the language model only interprets the question.
  • Privacy: a PII scanner blocks patient identifiers at ingest.
  • Ask in your language: English, Hindi and Arabic.
  • Alerts: set thresholds on any KPI; alerts explain the change and route to the owner.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How many KPIs does NABH 6th edition require?

NABH's 6th-edition KPI training covers 32 mandatory organisational KPIs and 18 department-specific clinical indicators. Hospitals should use NABH's official list and definitions for the mandatory set, then add the indicators their own leadership needs.

What are NABH quality indicators?

Measures that NABH-accredited hospitals track to monitor the structures, processes and outcomes of care — for example mortality rate, infection rates, patient falls, waiting times, bed occupancy and patient satisfaction. They sit mainly under the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement (PSQ) chapter.

What are the infection control KPIs for NABH?

Commonly tracked infection control indicators are CAUTI, CLABSI and ventilator-associated event rates per 1,000 device days, surgical site infection rate, and hand hygiene compliance. Infection control indicators are core elements under NABH's PSQ chapter.

How do you calculate bed occupancy rate and ALOS?

Bed occupancy rate = inpatient days ÷ (available beds × days in the period) × 100. Average length of stay = inpatient days ÷ discharges including deaths. ALOS is a number of days, not a percentage.

What KPIs should a hospital CEO review weekly?

A short list of 8–12: bed occupancy, ALOS, OPD volume, OPD-to-IPD and in-house pharmacy conversion, AR days, claim rejection rate, mortality, and serious incidents. The full quality set is reviewed monthly by the quality committee.

How often should NABH KPIs be reported?

Most hospital indicators are calculated monthly and reviewed by the quality committee, with trends presented to management. Follow NABH's specified frequency for each mandatory indicator where one is given.

What is the difference between NABH and JCI quality measures?

Both expect hospitals to select measures, validate data, analyse trends and act on them, and many indicators overlap. NABH sets indicators for Indian accreditation under its 6th edition; JCI's 8th edition applies internationally. Track each indicator once and tag it to both where relevant.

Can a hospital KPI dashboard be built from Excel exports?

Yes. Many hospitals start with monthly HIS, HR and finance exports in Excel. The key is a written definition for each KPI, a named data source, and a quarterly manual check of a sample.

What should a hospital KPI dashboard show?

For each KPI: the current value, the trend over 12 months, the target, the owner and any open corrective action. Group by audience — a weekly CEO view, monthly department views and an accreditation view.
